Injuries and Illnesses
When illness or injuries happen, it is important that you know where to find proper emergency medical care. At Medco ER & Urgent Care in Plano and Frisco, we are fully functioning emergency rooms, with the same diagnostic tools as most hospitals. We are prepared to help you and your family with any injuries or illnesses. Here are a few examples of some common kinds of illnesses and injuries that require immediate medical attention.
Injuries
- Burns: burns can easily become infected and can be difficult to clean thoroughly at home. It is important that you seek immediate medical attention so that the wound can be properly cleaned and dressed. If not treated properly, burns can result in permanent damage.
- Head Injuries: whenever someone has received a serious blow to the head, it is cause for concern. Injuries such as concussions are common, and the severity may not be readily evident. If someone receives a serious blow to the head, a thorough medical examination is very important. Traumatic brain injuries can lead to permanent physical and cognitive impairment.
- Electrocution: if someone has been electrocuted, it is important that you carefully shut off the source of power that caused the electrocution, apply a bandage to the area of concern, and immediately call 911 or visit the emergency room.
- Falls: even seemingly minor falls can result in significant injury, requiring an x-ray or other imaging to appropriately diagnose and treat. For older adults, broken bones resulting from a fall can become life-threatening.
Illness
- Fever: high fevers of over 102.2 degrees Fahrenheit are always cause for concern. If you are experiencing a high fever of 102.2 degrees or higher, seek immediate medical help.
- Food Poisoning: food poisoning can be caused by accidentally ingesting expired food, meat that hasn’t been properly cooked, raw eggs, food that has been packaged incorrectly, or a variety of other reasons. Food poisoning can cause serious illness that can sometimes be fatal if not treated properly. Food allergies can also result in emergency conditions requiring immediate treatment
- Coughing/Throwing Up Blood: coughing or throwing up blood is often a symptom of a much more serious issue. If you are experiencing this, please seek immediate medical care.
